Ahamkara is the duo of multi-instrumentalist Michael Blenkarn (The Axis of Perdition, Wodensthrone) and vocalist Steven Black.

Record label Bindrune Recordings described the band and its debut album as thus, saying. "The purpose of Ahamkara is to articulate and explore a fundamentally individualistic, existentialist approach to heathenism; personal and elemental, born of experience rather than tradition, of memory, psychogeography and the psychology of belief. The result is a completely unadulterated and personal vision of humanity's relationship with nature, the cosmos and its own limitations. The seeds of the band were sown as early as 2009 with the first fragments of material being created, but the full gestation of Ahamkara spanned a number of years of gradual work, finally resolving in 2013 with the completion of debut recording "The Embers of the Stars". This album was written to establish firm foundations for the band to build on, using broad washes of melody blending the mystical end of '90s black metal (Ulver, In The Woods..., etc.) with Anathema/Solstice inspired leads and traces of Cyclic Law-style dark ambient. It was recorded and mixed by the band and mastered by Saulius Bielskis (Haeresis, Velemara)."
